The University of California, Davis (UC Davis, UCD, or Davis) is a public research university and land-grant university adjacent to Davis, California. It is part of the University of California (UC) system and has been ranked as one of the top 10 public universities in the United States and the world by various organizations. Founded in 1905 as the University Farm, UC Davis is the second-oldest campus of the University of California system and has been a member of the Association of American Universities since 1959.
UC Davis has the third-largest enrollment in the UC System after UCLA and UC Berkeley and offers more than 102 undergraduate majors and 97 graduate and professional degrees. The Carnegie Foundation classifies UC Davis as a comprehensive doctoral research university with a medical program, and very high research activity. The UC Davis faculty includes 23 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 25 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 19 Fulbright Scholars, and 14 members of the American Law Institute.
UC Davis is located in the city of Davis, California, just west of Sacramento and is the largest employer in the city. The University of California, Davis Medical Center, a major research hospital, is located on the main campus. The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine is the largest in the United States and has been ranked first in the nation for four consecutive years. The UC Davis Aggies compete in the NCAA Division I level and are members of the Big West Conference. UC Davis also has a number of clubs and organizations, including fraternities and sororities, honor societies, cultural organizations, and a student-run newspaper, The California Aggie.
UC Davis is home to many distinguished alumni, including two Nobel laureates, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and a Fields Medal recipient. Notable alumni include James M. Buchanan, Jr., the 1986 Nobel laureate in economics; John E. Hopfield, the 1982 Nobel laureate in chemistry; and E.O. Wilson, the Pulitzer Prize–winning biologist.
